today Dell showed off their new 5 inch
Android device the dell mini 5 it's a
very strange but interesting mesh of a
lot of elements as includes a 5 inch
touchscreen a 5 megapixel camera Wi-Fi
and a SIM card slot for making calls so
what is it exactly really simple a giant
ipod touch tablet with Android that also
happens to make phone calls yeah I think
it's about time to get this one started
at first glance you can certainly say
that the dell mini 5 is a smart phone
until you see it person anyway then you
realize it's big really big it downright
warps an iPod Touch or iPhone even being
considerably bigger than the HTC hd2 one
of the largest smartphones on the market
today so while you can use it for calls
you'd better have a Bluetooth headset
nearby the operating system is a custom
dell built version
the demo unit at CES runs Android 1.6
but there's no telling what the final
retailers will ship with it looks quite
distinct from normal Android and in a
good way it looks very polished with a
strong emphasis on widgets in the
homescreen
as with many Android devices a row of
capacitive touch buttons runs across the
bottom which while not quite a sleek
look and on the iPhone or iPod Touch
still as bad as I mentioned the more the
mini 5s forced a 5 megapixel autofocus
camera with flash it also has Wi-Fi
Bluetooth in addition to having cell
service no SIM card was installed in the
demo unit but likely it will be for
either AT&T or t-mobile the words slate
and tablet were thrown around a few
times but the Mini 5 really isn't a
tablet it's like a giant smartphone
which seems odd as it's really just too
big to hold up to your mouth and talk to
him that along with the fact that del
has been saying that they are wanting to
sell their phones unlock lays me to
believe that the Mini 5 will be a large
header to the iPod Touch that just
happens to make phone calls the real
reason it has cell service I believe is
to have mobile annex which brings it
closer to being as fall asleep
infidel mini five is a really hard
device to figure out it's much larger
than a smartphone or iPod Touch but it's
on the smaller size of being a tablet it
makes phone call the and is comically
large to put up to you here will
probably be Sol was a carrier subsidy
but if the price is right it could do
really well without one all I know is
this it looks and feels great the
hardware is solid and well-built and the
software works very very well if they
get the price right figure out how
exactly to market it then they could
have a winner on your hands
