4 Earth-sized exoplanets found orbiting our nearest sun-like star
2017-08-09
for new earth-like planets have been
discovered orbiting our nearest sun-like
star Tau Ceti Tau Ceti is only a mere 12
light-years away and is visible with the
naked eye the four new exoplanets have
masses as low as 1.7 earth-mass making
them among the smallest planets ever
detected around nearby sun-like stars
according to an article published by the
University of Santa Cruz California two
of the exoplanets are within Tau
steadies habitable zone meaning that
they could support surface water and may
have daylian oceans the exoplanets were
discovered using astronomical data from
the harps spectrograph aka the exoplanet
hunter which is part of the European
Southern Observatory in Chile and the WM
Keck Observatory in Mauna Kea Hawaii the
last few years scientists and
astronomers have been making lots of new
exoplanet discoveries by perfecting a
technique for measuring the Doppler
shifts in the wobbling of a star caused
by the gravitational pull of nearby
orbiting planets scientists are now able
to detect variations in the movement of
a star as small as thirty centimeters
per second and they are hoping to soon
reach a ten centimeter per second
measurement milestone which is the limit
required for detecting earth analogs
