this is a hexbug spider and it's a
remote-controlled toy you can buy for
around twenty-five dollars but it's been
made autonomous with the bots alive
system the Box alive kit comes with a
decal you stick on top of the spider a
bunch of red and blue blocks and an
infrared blaster that plugs into a phone
hold your smartphone on top of the toy
and it comes to life with a mind of its
own the system has been programmed so
the robot navigates towards blue objects
and avoids the red ones so you can be
kind of cruel and trap it in a sea of
red objects or create a spiral maze so
it's hard for the bot to reach the blue
the creators told me that the artificial
intelligence has been designed to make
the robot feel organic more like a real
animal than a robot as you can see it's
a bit hesitant when it's moving around
and deciding what to do bots alive will
ship in july for thirty-five dollars for
the smartphone kit or sixty dollars for
the entire package including a hexbug
spider
