CNET How To - Bring the Start menu back to Windows 8
2012-11-05
maybe we'll all eventually get used to
the new start screen in Windows 8 but
until then there is a sneaky way to get
the Start menu back where it belongs
here's the workaround
head over to classic shell dot
sourceforge.net and hit the download now
button when it's done launch the
Installer once you get to the custom
setup screen you'll see this list see
classic shell actually has a number of
features including bringing back the
Explorer toolbar with classic Explorer
but if all you want is to bring back to
start menu click on the other options
and select entire feature will be
unavailable do that for the other
options and hit next finally hit install
and when it's done you'll see the
glorious Start menu back where it
belongs it doesn't look exactly the same
but its functions are identical click it
and the menu will pop up you can drag
and drop items to organize them see your
recent items and do everything you could
normally do in the classic start menu
now you'll notice that when you hit the
windows button that Start menu launches
if you still want the Start screen to
appear do this right-click the Start
menu and go to settings
here you can change the Start menu style
but in basic settings under windows key
options you can adjust it to open the
Start screen go through these settings
and tweak them to your liking but in any
case you now have the option to use a
Start menu just like you're used to for
