CNET News - Barber, candy shop, bank among deluxe perks at Facebook

this is the campus that Facebook built
with its metropolitan vibe it's not your
typical office Park our courtyard is
really paying tribute to our roots which
come from downtown Palo Alto so when you
go out there you're gonna feel kind of
an urban feel to it we have a Boulevard
running down the center for bicycles and
ripstix like most Main streets it has
all the necessities and then some
restaurants a full-fledged Bank and
arcade and a candy shop even by Silicon
Valley standards where gourmet foods
snack kitchens and free transportation
are common facebook offers perks that
could inspire workplace envy we actually
have a 1950s throwback barber shop that
does hot shaves we also have a woodshop
here the IT vending machine on-site
health center bike repair shop and other
extras may add to the bottom line but in
the end it's a smart business decision
we measure satisfaction utilization we
also take a look at productivity time
savings so if we can avoid someone
having to leave work they drive to a
doctor's appointment wait be seen and
have to come back the assumption of
course is that employees spend any spare
time building and improving the social
network what we offer our perks of
convenience our purposes is to create
white space for our employees so that
they can be freed up to focus on what
they're most passionate about for most
companies employee perks are a smart
business decision it makes sense during
boom times but what happens if a bus
comes along facebook says it would still
offer the benefits you know I think that
we're very thoughtful and methodical
about how we approach benefits so having
been through this many times in the
valley I think that going into it we go
in a lot more prepared that we don't
want to have to take things away later
on for a potential hire weighing
multiple job offers that could tip the
scales in Facebook's favor a recent
survey by the career site Glassdoor
found that one out of five workers said
office perks were important if we look
at comp and benefits for Facebook in
2013 on a five-point scale they rank
four point five out of five
that literally blows every other tech
company out of the water when we're
looking at Google Apple Yahoo and the
perks keep coming
plans for a new Facebook building
designed by world-renowned architect
Frank Gehry boast a rooftop garden and
inside an open layout which lends itself
to social networking naturally in Menlo
Park California I'm Sumi das Cena comm
