CNET News - Is Office for iPad a bigger boost for Microsoft or Apple?
2014-03-27
speaking in public for the first time
since taking the reigns as Microsoft's
new CEO Satya Nadella unveiled something
which actually helps Apple users
everything that we do going forward is
grounded in this worldview which I
describe as the world of ubiquitous
computing and ambient intelligence and
it's an amazing opportunity for growth
for our company Microsoft introduced
Office for iPad versions of PowerPoint
Excel and Word developed specifically
for Apple's tablet design that is both
familiar to them as an office user but
also very natural for an iPad user the
new apps allow iPad users to create and
edit documents spreadsheets and
presentations we actually even gone so
far as to build a custom keyboard for
Excel users that's super naturally used
so this keyboard really enables you to
do some of the things that on a Windows
PC you do with a keyboard and mouse like
keystroke commands are starting formulas
so why would Microsoft which sells its
own tablets release a product the
benefits Apple and its customers there
is no trade off it's reality for us it's
not a competitive reality that's not
what motivates us what motivates us is
the realities of our customers the
office for iPad apps are available to
download for free immediately though to
access all the features of the apps
you'll need an office 365 subscription
