we expect to find sensors in our
smartphones and tablets but they're now
popping up in some surprising places
we're actually embedding textile sensors
into socks to make them a little bit
smarter they may be the most abused
parts of our bodies but tech startup
epsilon is showing our feet a little TLC
people strike the ground that forces in
excess of 20 G's and airplanes break
down at 12 G's right so that's not good
for the shockwaves that we create for
ourselves and for our hips Elan
developed this anklet which attaches
magnetically to the sensor studded sock
inside is a small computer which
connects to a smartphone via bluetooth
so if I go running with my phone I can
get data and actionable information in
real time when you consume the phone is
both how far now fast and how many
calories you burn but also how well your
foot is striking the ground helpful for
runners looking to avoid injuries this
technology isn't just for runners there
are apps in development to help improve
your golf stance your fencing skills
even your tango moves epsilon says it's
socks are sturdy enough to withstand the
spin cycle and dryer and the anklet
while bulky now will shrink considerably
in the near future sensors can also
boost bike safety this cycling jersey
developed by researchers at the front
Hoffer institute in germany and demoed
at an Intel event is made out of
stretchable circuit boards when the
cyclist slows down LEDs on the shirt
light up much like a brake light it
could keep cars at a safe distance in
