Can Samsung's 4K Blu-ray player compete against streaming services?
2016-02-12
this is the Samsung UB DK 8500 the
world's first 4k blu-ray player it's
available now on the US for $399 a
couple of weeks earlier than expected
it's a good looker with a brushed finish
and some nice touches including dual
HDMI outputs if your receiver doesn't
support 4k signals for example features
of the player include a 4k resolution
naturally which is four times that of
1080p better contrast through high
dynamic range or HDR and better colors
while this player is seen as a
competitor to streaming it also includes
4k streaming services including Netflix
YouTube and Amazon Instant but because
of this competition 4k blu-ray is
probably the last physical disc format
will ever see blu-ray discs will cost
around $30 when they go on sale from
March 1st 2016 and include titles such
as the Martian and Mad Max fury road
unfortunately we're unable to test the
player fully until these discs arrive
but based on our initial testing with
standard DVDs and blu-rays the K 8500
offers excellent image quality and
speedy operation
