Car Tech - Audi takes the touch out of Android Auto
Car Tech - Audi takes the touch out of Android Auto
2015-05-28
I'm here at Google i/o taking a look at
the Android auto implementation in the
all-new Audi q7 earlier this week we saw
an Android auto implementation in the
Hyundai Sonata but that used a
touchscreen the unique thing about
outtie is we have an indirect controller
instead of a touchscreen with an Android
phone plugged into the car I've got that
on the console here I'm looking at the
main screen that I'd see in an Audi
automobile if I push down on my main
controller here I enter my android auto
interface in this interface I've got a
row of icons across the bottom of the
screen and I can scroll through them
with this dial so I get navigation phone
a main menu audio and then a set of
other apps that can be a lot of
different apps that the automaker can
implement to the car so with navigation
for example I can just use the voice
command button and ask for any
destination in Google Maps and it'll use
the Google cloud interface to look up
that destination and then offer me
navigation to it using this system here
that's actually powered by the phone
instead of the navigation system that's
powered by the car so right now it's
showing some tiles such as it thinks I
have a flight departing from SFO so it
tells me about that that's from my
calendar so this is a slightly different
implementation of Android auto than
we've seen in the other cars just use
the indirect controller but it all works
very smoothly it's pretty impressive
right now they tell me the screen isn't
quite filling the entire LCD here so
once this goes on sale later this year
we'll see that fully implemented I'm
