Hovering' touchscreen tech senses you from distance

hello I'm the Westway for scene editor
at Mobile World Congress 2013 checking
out one of the more unusual pieces of
technology that we found around the show
it's a touch screen technology that even
works when your hand is hovering above
the panel so this panel is made by
stmicroelectronics it's called the
fingertip and what it is is a touch
screen controller so it's the chip that
controls a tablet or smartphone to touch
screen and it's extremely sensitive ok
so here's how it works
the tablet itself is monitoring the
electric field that its screen gives off
and if your finger enters that electric
field then the circuit is closed and the
touch if you like is registered because
the sensitivity is so high it can
support multi-touch and it can even
support using a pencil while you're
wearing one of these massive skiing
gloves so that's handy if you want to
play Angry Birds in the Arctic so this
isn't available in the market yet this
is something that the company is going
to be trying to sell to manufacturers of
smart phones and tablets I personally
think it's a great idea it cuts down on
the finger prints you get on your screen
so fingers crossed we see it in some
popular devices soon I'm Luis Rey for
CNET's and this is the
STMicroelectronics fingertip
