Parrot Disco takes consumer drones in a new direction
2016-08-24
with the disco drone parrot managed to
make flying an RC plane as easy if not
easier than flying a high-end quadcopter
the $1,300 fixed-wing foam aircraft is
lightweight has almost no moving parts
and can fly it up to 50 miles per hour
for up to 45 minutes to launch it all
you do is turn it on and toss it into
the air and it will automatically ascend
to 50 meters and start circling as it
waits for your command using the new sky
controller to remote paired with a
smartphone you control speed with the
left stick and direction and altitude
with the right all your telemetry and a
view of the on-board camera are all
available on-screen and despite being
much smaller than the original the
controller still has a range of up to
1.2 miles it can also be used with the
included cockpit glasses a first person
view headset that you slide a smartphone
into and it immerses you in the view
from the full HD camera in the nose the
controls are simple to master for
beginners but if you're already a
skilled pilot you can use a regular RC
transmitter with the disco and fly with
manual mode when you're done flying
Landing just requires a button press and
a little bit of room
