if you ever find yourself in a situation
where you want to leave your computer on
for several hours but you also want it
to shut down once an update or download
has finished there's a very simple
workaround here's how it works to create
a shutdown timer manually either open
command prompt or press the windows + R
keys to open the run window type the
command shutdown - s - t and the time in
seconds for instance for 20 minutes you
would type 1200 when you press Enter or
click OK the timer will begin to cancel
the timer open run or command prompt
once again and type shutdown - a and
press Enter
for even faster access turn this command
into a desktop shortcut right click on
an empty space on the desktop hover over
new and select shortcut in the side menu
in the path field type the shutdown
command shutdown - s - t and again the
time in seconds then click next give the
shortcut a name such as shutdown 20
minutes and click finish
anytime you double click the shutdown
shortcut the timer will start you can
also create a shortcut for the shutdown
cancel command by right-clicking the
shortcut icon and selecting properties
you can assign a custom icon and change
the timer link or name for more tips and
tricks be sure to check out cnet.com /al
