when Samsung announced last month that
it would be adding a next-gen security
camera to its lineup I was pretty
excited its previous model the 190
dollar Samsung smart cam HD pro was
pretty good it offered 1080p a 128
degree diagonal field of view and a
bunch of other features it also offers
local storage which is something that a
lot of people who want to stay away from
cloud storage are looking for and while
the previous HD pro will continue to be
sold in stores this new model will also
retail for one hundred and ninety bucks
it also offers basically the same suite
of features you get 1080p you get a 130
degree diagonal field of view motion and
sound alerts and a 16 gigabyte microSD
card included with your purchase and at
a glance this camera offers a clear
design upgrade the previous version was
clunky big white really not a discreet
option for at-home DIY security but this
one is much smaller it has a slimmer
profile and it's black so it should
blend in more easily with most
surroundings
it also looks a lot like nest cam a
camera I reviewed recently that I really
really like especially because of its
great design but even though it looks
similar to nest cam the design just
really isn't there in the same way it
doesn't feel as sturdy it doesn't feel
as robust and it actually has kind of a
cheap plastic you feel that the previous
Samsung model had even though it looks
totally different the HD plus also
operates on the same Android and iOS app
as its predecessor and assets actually
really confusing to navigate so what you
end up with is the same configuration
the same in-app features and no
discernible difference in performance
between this model and the last even
though Samsung did claim that this model
would have better night vision and
better motion and audio alerts the
Samsung smart cam HD plus is a fine
camera but a little disappointing given
that it's a next gen model with last gen
features and functionality
