Semi trucks gain self-driving powers with Otto (CNET Update)

if self-driving cars make you nervous
just wait until you find yourself next
to a self-driving semi-trailer truck a
new company called Auto wants to put
self-driving big rigs on the highways
but these are not specially made
vehicles Auto is able to retrofit an
existing truck with sensors and software
to give it self-driving powers Auto is
currently testing three trucks on
California highways but it is not
revealing much detail on what it would
cost to update a truck with these
sensors Auto was created by former
Google employees that worked on
self-driving cars and Google Maps this
is not the first autonomous big rig
we've seen in action last year truck
maker Freightliner revealed the first
self-driving commercial truck to receive
a special license plate in nevada for
autonomous operation on public highways
that truck called inspiration has
cameras built into the front that
watched out for road signs lane markers
and other nearby vehicles it still
requires a human driver to get the truck
moving from a start and to handle some
maneuvers that's it for this tech news
