the Solar Impulse 2 solar-powered
airplane made a dramatic entrance in the
San Francisco Bay Area this weekend
splitting the uprights of the iconic
Golden Gate Bridge as it made its way to
moffitt airfield in Mountain View
California the Solar Impulse 2 has been
on a mission to fly around the world
using only solar power the Solar Impulse
2 in its pilot bertrand piccard began
the journey in the United Arab Emirates
in March of 2015 the plane is able to
fly for up to five days and five nights
utilizing 17,000 248 solar cells spread
out across the fuselage and wings of the
aircraft which are capable of producing
340 kilowatt hours of battery life per
day which is stored in 633 kilograms of
lithium polymer batteries on board the
plane this allows for the plane to
continue flying in the dark the Solar
Impulse 2 was completing its Pacific leg
of the trip after was stuck in Hawaii
for months while crews replaced some
overheated batteries and made plans for
the next leg of the trip the Solar
Impulse to touch down at Moffett
airfield just before midnight on
Saturday and will be headed across the
United States will eventually cross the
Atlantic Ocean making its way to Europe
or northern Africa
