if you're trying to vanish from the internet you probably aren't gonna have much use for a facebook page or twitter account delete deactivate or close all of your social media accounts by going to the privacy or security settings page of that account same goes for all of your online shopping accounts like Amazon if you're not given any options to delete at least remove your credit card information and create an alias the more random the better when you type your name into a search engine all sorts of results might pop up that you wish you could remove start by contacting the site's webmasters and ask for removal or if you find the content inappropriate and perhaps illegal try petitioning the search engine itself google has a removal tool exactly for this purpose and finally delete all of your email accounts make sure that this is the last step as you'll need an email address to complete the previous steps but once you do enjoy life off the grid in San Francisco I'm Kara Tsuboi cnet.com for CBS News
