the rise of virtual reality headsets
like the HTC vive and oculus rift has
led to a new arms race in gaming
desktops heating up a category that we
haven't talked much about in the last
few years adding fuel to the fire is a
new generation of graphics cards that's
the most important component in the
gaming or VR ready PC NVIDIA has the new
geforce gtx 1080 which costs around six
hundred dollars and you can already get
it in systems or mortgage in PC
alienware digital storm Falcon Northwest
acer velocity micro and others for this
roundup we're testing everything from
single card desktop that costs around
two thousand dollars to towers with
overclocked CPUs and dual GPUs running
in sli that can cost up to six thousand
dollars one of my highlights was being
able to test a couple of these new
all-in-one desktops with giant curved 34
inch screens the verdict is that these
new cards part of the first wave of PC
components at least partly designed with
VR in mind offer amazing performance a
single Nvidia 1080 card bought
separately or as part of a new gaming
desktop is expensive yes but not
outrageously so and the pair of duel
card systems we tested showed us big
boost in our tests but keep in mind you
can always start with a single graphics
card system and then add a second card
later on if your PC case has room for us
