there's a lot in the Lumix GX 85 to
appeal to family photographers into
first-time mirrorless buyers especially
as an alternative to a decent first DSLR
it's got a great feature set very good
photo and video quality for its class
pretty fast performance and an
attractive relatively compact design I'm
Laura grinning and this is the $800
panasonic lumix GX 85 that's GX 80 for
you folks in the UK the cameras main pit
configuration comes with Panasonic's
tiny collapsible 12 to 32 millimeter
lens which is equivalent to a 24 to 64
millimeter range it's not a great lens
but it's fine for everyday photography
and good light I like the cameras design
the viewfinder is reasonably big and
comfortable and it has a modest grip and
a tilting touchscreen display for
control freaks it's got both front and
back dials and direct access to most of
the things you need it uses a new 16
megapixel sensor which doesn't have the
blurring effect of an anti-aliasing
filter that means it produces sharper
images than the typical Micro Four
Thirds camera the extra sharpness also
helps it retain detail in low-light and
produce sharp 4k video first shooting
can easily keep up with kids and pets at
about 6.6 frames per second with
autofocus sort of amused to autofocus
systems choosing the wrong focus area
for moving subjects but the GX 85 just
completely failed to lock focus
occasionally mid bursts it's fast and
fine for Stills though
except the battery life is pretty bad a
less than a 300 shots
you
