Facebook wants you to use Facebook
differently the social network is on a
mission to get users to join meaningful
groups and hang out often inside those
groups like a community Facebook CEO
Mark Zuckerberg announced his new
company focus during a gathering in
Chicago called the Facebook community
summit the company mission statement
changed now instead of getting more
people connected it's to bring the world
closer together this comes right as many
are criticizing the social network as
being a tool that has divided people
used to spread false news and extremist
views the Facebook newsfeed is not
designed to open you up to the world
rather the newsfeed is filtered to show
you views and interests similar to your
own creating a perception bubble but
Zuckerberg didn't talk about changing
the newsfeed filters instead he wants to
make users come together through joining
communities in a group maybe you'll find
common ground with others and when you
feel like you belong you can learn to
care about other people's issues in a
post Zuckerberg said that only when
enough of us feel a sense of purpose and
support in our own lives
can we start caring about broader issues
issues he said like climate change
curing diseases ending poverty and
stopping violence Facebook added new
tools for group administrators to make
it easier to manage and interact with
members of course there is a business
benefit to this if you spend more time
on Facebook with a group you like then
Facebook can make more money from
advertisers with happy users I'm Bridget
