the Solar Impulse - solar-powered
airplane has completed its historic
flight around the world using only
sunlight for fuel the Solar Impulse -
began its journey in the city of Abu
Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on
March 9th 2015 and completed its mission
landing back in Abu Dhabi on July 26th
2016 the Solar Impulse team and its
famous pilot Swiss engineer and
businessman Andre Borschberg and Swiss
psychiatrist and aeronaut Bertrand
Piccard began this long journey with
their first solar-powered flight back in
December of 2003 the goal of the Solar
Impulse project was to bring worldwide
attention to clean technologies and
prove that flying an aircraft using
renewable resources like sunlight was
indeed a real possibility the trip had
its fair share of challenges like rough
weather a pilot's illness and overcoming
technical obstacles like overheating
batteries which stranded the team in
Hawaii for a period but in the end the
Solar Impulse completed his journey and
has opened the minds of aviation experts
around the world proving that it's
possible and propelling the aviation
industry forward towards a cleaner
