hey there I'm Josh Goldman senior editor
with cnet and this is a look at nikons
high-end rugged compact the coolpix
aw100 it's rated to be waterproof down
to 33 feet shockproof 25 feet and
freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit to
go along with that it also has an
electronic compass built in as well as
GPS receiver so you can geotag your
photos and track down points of interest
the camera also has something like
outcalls active control which allows you
to instead of using its buttons it
allows you to shake the camera and tap
the body in order to change various
settings that's good because it's
buttons are a bit too close together and
they're small and they feel a bit spongy
likely because of the waterproofing
beneath them and speaking of
waterproofing the battery card slot and
ports are all under this single door
which is nice but the lock could be a
little bit better a little bit more
secure what could also be a bit better
is the lens it has a small maximum
aperture of f 39 which means if you're
shooting in less than full Sun you're
probably going to be using high iso's or
slow shutter speeds in order to get a
good shot so while it's photos are
pretty good when you have plenty of
light shooting indoors without a flash
or deep underwater probably won't get
you great shots otherwise it's a good
rugged compact especially in light of
its price which is now down below 300
dollars I'm Josh Goldman and that's a
look at the nikon coolpix aw100
