the u.s. is investigating Tesla after a
fatal crash a person in a Model S was
killed in a car crash while the Tesla
was engaged in autopilot mode the
National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration is looking into the
matter autopilot mode on a Tesla is a
set of features that lets the car
automatically speed up or slow down
based on the speed limit and traffic
autopilot also can control steering in
some situations the feature is not
automatically enabled when someone
purchases a test the vehicle instead the
driver must activate it Tesla offers
several warnings to the drivers such as
you need to maintain control and
responsibility for your vehicle Tesla
provided details about the crash the
Model S was on a divided highway with
autopilot engaged
a tractor-trailer drove across the
highway perpendicular to the Tesla
autopilot and the driver did not notice
the white side of the tractor with a
bright sky behind it the Model S passed
under the trailer Tesla says this is the
first known fatality in over 130 million
miles
when autopilot mode was activated the
company says in the US every 94 million
miles there's a fatality among all
vehicles the u.s. investigation does not
mean Tesla or autopilot is at fault
however this could have an impact on
