Vizio's unique widescreen TV - First Look

2012-07-16
if you had to list two things you hate about watching movies on television what would they be I would say my first would be Giada that distracting jerkiness you see on horizontal pans and the second would be black bars but what if I told you you can buy a television that would get rid of the black bars without ruining picture quality hi I'm Ty Pendlebury from CNET and your answer could be the new vizio 21 by 9 television it has a native widescreen resolution that gets rid of black bars with a snap this 58 inch vizio features an auto sensing circuit that gets rid of the bars and gives you a bigger screen area in widescreen than a normal 60-inch television the only problem is that it only works for a few hundred movies that are in native 21 by 9 and even then it has to scale them up to the full image size but what happens when you watch high-definition television on this or in other words 16 by 9 content ah the dreaded black bars again this also means the TV turns into a 46-inch for normal content but at least you can fill the space with one of Vizio Smart TV widgets by pressing this blue button but how well does it work well most of the time it does but it can be slow to detect any changes in resolution or with really wide films like Ben Hur leave a really big bar around all of your picture picture quality on the other hand is pretty good but for three and a half grand you'd expect more than pretty good colors are quite accurate though and with a bit of tweaking you can get some pretty good saturation from colors if you watch 3d movies you'll be pleased to hear works as well as this year's LG passive TV but it's not as bright as the Samsung ES 8000 which is about the same price the Vizio xvt 3d 5:8 0cm is a curio which offers quite a lot of fun but if you're a video purist you'll want to steer clear this has been Thai Pendlebury for cnet.com
