japan-based phone maker kyocera demo two
devices a salt water resistant phone
called a torque go2 and another handset
that you can wash with soap these phones
have been out for a few months now in
Japan and while they're not necessarily
new they're indicative of where the
industry is heading when it comes to
waterproof handsets a lot of waterproof
phones you hear about like the most
recent Samsung Galaxy s7 are only
protected against fresh water so don't
think about taking it into the ocean
salt has corrosive elements and can
render the seals and rubber gaskets
inside brittle and soap have detergents
that can dry up these materials too but
with these devices kyocera is trying to
widen the scope of where we can
physically take our phones so for
example if you get your handset really
dirty and greasy you can just do this
currently phones like the torque go2 are
kind of niche and demand for them is low
outside Japan there's also a lot to be
done still surviving a dunk is one thing
but actually being fully usable is
another story
