AMD Radeon RX 480: Overclocking

2016-06-29
alright guys I'm not going to beat around the bush for this one sadly the rx4i overclocking head room is pretty damn limited I was able to increase the operating frequency by 5% and that took quite a bit of messing around with AMD's new white band overclocking utility to achieve in short I was only able to increase the boost clock from the default 1266 megahertz frequency to just 13 30 megahertz this 64 megahertz overclock is the best I could achieve with the AMD reference card using the maximum power target and voltage supported in the white band utility compared to the previous generation AMD GPUs and operating frequency of over 1.3 gigahertz isn't bad yet when compared to the current generation in video Pascal GPUs it's a little concerning given that operating at no less than 1.5 gigahertz out of the box and can be overclocked to maintain over 2 gigahertz of course right now in video doesn't have any affordable Pascal parts competing with the RX 480 but when they do you can be almost guaranteed they'll be capable of operating well over 1.3 gigahertz and this is why I'm concern for the RX 480 not only that but we found in my previous 23 game benchmark video the RX 480 was just a few percent faster than the GTX 970 and consumed a similar level of power this previous generation maxwell card doesn't cost a great deal more in fact right now it's only an extra twenty dollars the 970 is also an excellent overclocker so this should make for a pretty interesting comparison here's a quick look at the maximum overclocked operating frequency of the cards we tested the focus here will be on the RX 480 and GTX 970 though out of interest the GTX 980 and gtx 1070 have also been overclocked please note that although the 1070 founder's edition card has been overclocked to 17 26 megahertz for the base clock and 1903 megahertz for the boost it's actually operating closer to 2 gigahertz in our test due to the way in videos GPU boost 3.0 technology works for a full list of the tests of some specs please check the video description alright let's do this thing I'll kick things off with battlefield 4 where the stop clock 480 was 5 frames behind the 970 in our overclocked config it closed this gap to a single frame however once we have a clock the 970 it kind of left the 484 dead with a 64 FPS average many 970 was 14% faster leading the pack was the overclocked gtx 1070 of course which managed 97 FPS the next game tester was ARMA 3 and again overclocking gains for the 480 were pretty underwhelming we saw an increase of 3 FPS from 36 to 39 FPS for an 8% game the 970 on the other hand gained 14% through overclocking for a much healthier 48 fps the 10 70's overclocking games weren't huge either here tachyon 5 FPS for an 8 percent increase in star wars battlefront the stock 480 was able to match the stock o'clock GTX 970 with 52 FPS the 970 was the better overclock however managing to climb to 59 FPS compared to 56 from the RX 480 the 1070 increased its own performance by 12% in this game in the new doom game the RX 4 ad was able to pick the stopcock 970 once our overclock was applied the 970 game plenty though through overclocking and increased its performance by an impressive 19% the playing field was quite level in Just Cause 3 where the 480 was a couple of frames quicker than the 970 with their respective stock clocks but fell 3 frames behind once both cards were overclocked the OC 480 was 36% behind the overclocked 1070 which is about right based on their MSRP s in Far Cry primal the overclocking gains were fairly negligible again this time the 480 games is 2 FPS for a 5% gain well the 970 gains 3 frames for itself nothing much changed in our final game tested the division both the 970 and rx 480 gained 2 FPS on average through overclocking however the 480 was just ahead here ok so prior to any overclocking the radian RX 4 ad was an average 4% faster than the gtx 970 or 1440p not a bad result as the RX 4 it is slightly cheaper than the current GTX 970 asking price however once we take the maximum overclocking potential of the reference GTX 970 and rx 480 into account the tide turns somewhat the RX 480 is now 7 percent slower than the GTX 970 as it gains just a 6 percent performance boost through overclocking whereas the GTX 970 you became 13% faster the RX 480 is around 7 percent cheaper than the cheapest 970 card right now so when it comes to overclocking both offer a similar cost per frame ratio they also consume similar levels of power so the matchup is surprisingly even that being the case it is easy be a little disappointed with this given we're comparing in videos previous generation Maxwell architecture against AMD's new flagship Polaris GPU still AMD has been successful in driving down the price and gamers can now enjoy performance that previously cost over $300 for around $200 what do you guys think of the RX 480 is overclocking let me know in the comments I'm your host Matt
