Hitachi Deskstar 0S03208 3TB SATA3 7200RPM 3.5IN Hard Drive Unbagging & First Look Linus Tech Tips

welcome to my unbagging of the hitachi
desk star 3 terabyte this is a 3
terabyte SATA drive it runs at 7200 RPM
that's how fast the disc spins so unlike
some of the other three terabyte drives
on the market in this particular price
range this is a full speed desktop drive
so some of the other ones are like lean
branded drives whatever the case may be
meaning that they do spin at a slower
spindle speed in order to conserve power
and that's one of the reasons and also
to provide higher yields but they don't
perform quite as well you can see this
guy right here was actually Wow
manufactured in December 2010 so this is
a SATA 3 6 gigabit per second drive
running at 7200 RPM and with 3 terabytes
of capacity so what's the benefit of
higher densities well you get to store
more as we've known for quite some time
you also get better performance because
hard drives are a physical movement
piece of machinery so what that means is
there's actually a drive head moving
around on there reading the data so the
closer together your data is the more
dense it is the quicker it can read it
because the less it has to move to get
to that latest piece so that's one of
the reasons that increasing drive
density has driven up hard drive
performance over the years so we've got
SATA power back here SATA 3 6 gigabit
per second data right there and I just
wanted to tell you guys as part of my
unboxing actually well the reason I did
this one was because Hitachi has what I
consider to be the most competitive
drive in the market right now in terms
of the performance as well as the price
point but bear in mind before you buy a
three terabyte drive you want to make
sure of a couple things first of all you
can see right here gigabyte advertises
right on the back of their z68 board 3
terabyte + drive support so not all
motherboards are going to support 3
terabyte densities and the same goes for
things like external nas boxes some of
them are going to require firmware
updates or even a nice box upgrade in
order to support 3 terabyte drives so
the reason I asked
we needed some three terabyte drives and
I grabbed four of them was because I'm
going to be using them for my demo of
the javelin s4 media server and so I had
to grab them anyway so I figured why not
do an unboxing so there it is my
unboxing Hitachi 3 terabyte drive don't
