Moto Z2 Force Real Audio Review: Living the dongle life...
2017-08-08
hey everybody wand Agnel here for pocket
now and motorola as a company isn't
really known for being a top multimedia
brand sure there have been a couple
shining examples like stereo speakers on
the Nexus 6 but historically this has
been a label which represents business
grade durability and communications
reliability a few experiments into
crowd-pleasing stuff really haven't
gotten their way we find ourselves with
a fairly controversial device just what
do we expect out of a premier flagship
phone kicking off this audio examination
with speaker tech if you're only going
to put one speaker on a phone motorola
has the right recipe for how to do that
I don't think the speakers really any
higher quality than any of our other
mono speaker phones but just the fact
that it's pointed in the right direction
just makes this experience so much nicer
there's only going to be one speaker on
your phone it should be pointed at your
face and it might as well be at the top
of the phone so it can double as a much
louder speakerphone solution which still
lines up with your ear in your jaw
that's all well and good but we also
have to talk about the headphone game
namely the lack of any 3.5 millimeter
headset or phone Oh Jack on this phone
we're playing with angles just like last
year's moto Z unfortunately for this
year's phone motorola is facing much
steeper headphone competition both LG
and samsung steps up this year with true
32-bit playback and punch your amps and
standouts like the oneplus 5 shows you
can spend a little less and get a little
bit more very few modern smartphones
really have issues playing 32-bit audio
these days but this is one of the few
premium options this year which is still
truncating output back down to 16 bit
playing a 32-bit 192 kilohertz audio
file we should be able to generate
frequencies of sound that most dogs
cannot hear but looking at the chart we
can see the moto z2 is falling way short
of the competition plus the rest of the
numbers from our analysis are either
good or ok noise floor signal-to-noise
ratio harmonic distortion they're all
just fine these quality numbers might
not have been so bad at Motorola had at
least given us a decent amp on board
yeah this is LG g5 territory and is
woefully inadequate for powering nicer
headphones if you're listening to your
tunes on some inexpensive consumer
earbuds again this is all fine it's
going to be good enough but at this
price point at this price tear and with
a ton of competition starting to
undercut what this phone is launched at
are we really okay with just good enough
these are just obnoxious to keep track
of and if you lose one say you're
travelling you can't just go to an
airport gadget store and hope that
they'll have a replacement until we can
sort out USB audio on Android really
your safest bet for these headphone jack
less devices is to invest in some decent
Bluetooth audio gear and the one small
concern there for the Moto z2 we've not
yet gotten confirmation if this supports
aptX that's a high quality wireless
streaming codec that's a concern right
now but it's a little less of a concern
if we're looking
long-term as Android Oh should bring
native aptX support to Android in the
future that higher quality audio codec
will just be baked into your operating
system there you have it folks the audio
on the moto z2 force I'm digging that
front facing speaker I really like that
as a solution for media and for phone
calls but this headphone game that's
pretty weak as always folks thanks so
much for watching be sure to subscribe
to this channel for more reviews like
these we have a whole series of real
audio reviews where you can compare our
analysis and our benchmarks across all
of the phones we've reviewed and helped
us out with a share on your favorite
social network we're walking out I'm
Juan Carlos bag now so I'm gadget guy on
Twitter and Instagram and I will catch
you all on the next review
only one other flagship phone this year
has been playing in this disappointing
territory and wouldn't you know it it's
also rocking a dongle
