Synaptics ForcePad pressure-sensitive touchpad: a hands-on demonstration

2012-08-20
well this is sean hollister with the virgin we're taking a look at synaptics new force pad this is a prototype of a new touch pad that we're going to start seeing in new laptops which uses for four sensors kind of like a wii fit balance board to detect presses and pressure sensitivity rather than a physical button and hinge we've got one here in this lenovo you 350 a product marketing manager with the force pad is showing off you can push down with five fingers and it will register up to 1,000 grams of force sensitivity per finger detecting up to these five different touches here you can see pushes down harder with the fingers the columns will go up and down by different amounts and there are a variety of use cases for this above and beyond detecting a touch for one thing it should allow manufacturers to make for thinner notebooks because without the space for a hinge design beneath the touch pad less mechanicals there's a lot more room but also there can you can use it for things like this flight simulation demonstration here as robert is pushing down different amounts at different positions on the touch pad he's controlling this plane just with the just with his fingers on the surface if you push this down at the very top of the touchpad playing pitch down without some top of the punch pad to pitch up bottom of the touchpad to pinch down left and right to bank in those directions you can imagine the flexibilities would give artists and paint programs be able to detect larger thicker brush strokes and things like that as well thank you for watching
